A year intensive master’s program that provides brilliant young Africans with state-of-the-art training in machine learning and its applications has been launched by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) for the third intake of its matchless African Master’s in Machine Intelligence (AMMI) in collaboration with Facebook and Google.
The AMMI program gathers an international set of African students who build strong ties based on academic excellence and intellectual growth, and have the common commitment to contribute to the future of Machine Learning in Africa. According to the founder and director of the AMMI program Prof. Moustapha Cisse, it is imperative to prepare AMMI students to lead the continent’s AI revolution”.

The current cohort of AMMI students is spread across two AIMS centers (AIMS Ghana and AIMS Rwanda) and includes 77 students with 32% female students coming from 18 African nations and follow in the footsteps of the outstanding past cohort who interned or in residency at MILA, IVADO, Vector Institute, Facebook, and others.
AIMS launched the African Masters in Machine Intelligence (AMMI) program at its Rwanda campus two years ago. And in partnership with Facebook and Google, AMMI plans to bring the best of AI education in Africa where AMMI students interact with world-class lecturers to grow their technical skills to respond to both present and future needs of Africa and the world. Founded in 2003, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a Pan-African network of centres of excellence for post-graduate training, research and public engagement in mathematical sciences. The AIMS network has six centres of excellence teaching a Masters in Mathematical Sciences, including a co-operative option with a direct link to industry in three centres. Currently, the network has over 1900 alumni from 43 African countries.

The network also includes research centres and programs with 90 researchers including six prestigious Chairs across the network. In Cameroon and Rwanda, AIMS runs a gender-responsive teacher training program, in addition to two critical initiatives: Quantum Leap Africa to prepare Africa for the coming quantum revolution, and the Next Einstein Forum to propel Africa on to the global scientific stage.

To apply, applicants should at least have a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, engineering or an equivalent with strong mathematics background, be interested or have background in artificial intelligence/machine learning, and have demonstrated leadership skills & a Pan-African attitude.
