Moroccan Startup Accelerator Launches Three Programs for African Entrepreneurs

Moroccan startup accelerator HSEVEN, the largest startup accelerator in Africa, has launched three incubation and acceleration programs to help African entrepreneurs build high-impact startups. HSEVEN which is Africa’s biggest startup accelerator with capacity to accelerate 200 startups per year has launched three programs for African entrepreneurs. The programs “Rise-Up,” “Re-Start,” and “Disrupt” aim to accelerate the transformation of the African economy amid the fourth technological and industrial revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic. Amine Al-Hazzaz, founder and CEO of HSEVEN said that “it is time for entrepreneurs and startups of Morocco and Africa to transform our economies by focusing on new homegrown solutions in key impactful sectors: SharedEconomy, MedTech, EdTech, AgriTech, GreenTech, inclusive FinTech, and GovTech.”

The three programs target startups with two to five founders that are still in an early stage of conception and aim to impact Africa through innovative services, products, and business models. “Rise-Up” and “Re-Start” programs will grant the selected entrepreneurs MAD 200,000 (€18,000), as well as a MAD 500,000 forgivable loan (€45,000) and an eventual MAD 1.5 million (€135,000) to MAD 15 million (€1.35 million) non-guaranteed loan. The Innov-Invest program of Morocco’s Central Guarantee Fund (CCG) will provide the funds with the support of the World Bank and the Central Popular Bank (BCP) of Morocco.

Meanwhile, startups selected in the “Disrupt” program will benefit from a seed investment of MAD 1.65 million (€150,000) at the start of the program for 5% to 7% equity, then an eventual investment of MAD 5.5 million (€500,000) to MAD 16.5 million (€1.5 million) at the end of the program. Venture capital firms Azur Partners and Upline Alternative Investments will finance the selected projects, in collaboration with the Dutch Good Growth Fund’s (DGGF) Triple Jump program. “HSEVEN’s ambition is to accelerate entrepreneurs and startups that will reshape Africa’s future,” Al-Hazzaz said.

The call for applications for the programs will be open until June 30 via HSEVEN’s website. HSEVEN’s team and its network of experts will conduct the selection process. Besides funding, the selected startups and entrepreneurs will also benefit from strategic advice and expertise. Selected entrepreneurs for the “Rise-Up” and “Re-Start” incubation programs will benefit from seven design sprints, 12 workshops, 24 mentoring sessions, and 24 weekly sessions with HSEVEN’s team, as well services with a value of $8,680 from Amazon Web Services.

Meanwhile, startups selected for the “Disrupt” program will benefit from 15 workshops, 15 mentoring sessions, 15 working sessions with HSEVEN, and services valued at $50,680 from Amazon Web Services. Entrepreneurs will also have access to a network of more than 350 mentors, influential leaders, and partners to gain increasing access to national and international markets. Participants in the three programs will spend the incubation period at the HSEVEN campus, located in the Marina of Casablanca.

African startups  desiring the support of an investor to incubate or accelerate their solutions are invited to pitch to international accelerator Hseven, which has launched during an e-conference, a call for projects for its support programs intended for innovative and high-impact startups, for the post-Covid19 economic recovery in Morocco and Africa.

Here Is What You Need To Know

  • The “Rise-Up”, “Re-Start” and “Disrupt” programs designed by Hseven, will aim to support around 20 startups for each program, at different stages of their journey, ranging from ideation to incubation until acceleration.
  • This call for candidates intervenes in the context of the current crisis and highlights the crucial role of startups that provide attractive, concrete and saving solutions all over the world for people who are in the daily fight against Covid-19 as well as the billions of confined people.
  • Hseven founder Amine Al Hazzaz stressed the need to identify new startups and new entrepreneurs in Morocco and Africa who can provide local solutions that are better suited to our new context.
  • He also called for taking advantage of this crisis by leveraging emerging technologies for more performance and innovation, and reviewed the future sectors on which Morocco and Africa must focus.

What Types Of Startups Is HSEVEN Looking For?

  • The project leaders operating in these sectors of the future including the collaborative economy, education technologies and fintech will be selected by HSEVEN according to several criteria for a start of support between July 15 and September 15, clarified Mr. Al Hazzaz.
  • As part of the “Rise-up” ideation program, which will take effect on September 1, selected entrepreneurs will have access to a grant of 200,000 dirhams ($54k) to start their entrepreneurial adventure, he noted, noting that this program which spans 3 months, focuses on seven workshops and 12 working sessions with the Hseven team.

What Hseven Programmes Give To Startups

  • “Re-start”, the incubation program aimed at entrepreneurs at the dawn of the effective start of their startup, gives access to 500,000 dirhams ($136k) of loans on honor, as well as 1.5 to 15 million of dirhams (MDH) ($400k to $4 million) of bank loans without guarantees and without personal guarantees, and relates to 15 workshops and up to 15 thousand euros of technological credits provided by Amazon, according to the founder of Hseven. 
  •  The “Disrupt” program, which spans 6 months, is an acceleration program for startups already on the move in need of scaling up, offering funding ranging from 250,000 euros to 1.5 million euros for a minority stake between 5% and 7%, he added. 
  •  Through these programs, Hseven aims to support at least 70 startups, in order to contribute to the recovery of the economy and offer concrete and innovative solutions that can be adopted on a very large scale, at the country and continental level.

Startups In Morocco Can Now Access Up To $1.5 million Loan Without Collateral From Accelerator HSeven

Good news for startups and businesses in Morocco. Morocco’s Banque Centrale Populaire (BCP) group and the Moroccan Hseven, an accelerator of startups in Africa, have both entered into a strategic partnership with the objective is to promote innovative startups, through an offer of support and financing adapted according to their level of maturity. Eligible startups will have access to a loan of 1.5 to 15 million DH ($1.5 million) without guarantee or personal guarantee, and with a deferral before repayment of up to 36 months.

“Through this partnership, we are committed to supporting innovative projects by providing financial support that meets the constraints of project leaders, so that they can start their entrepreneurial activities in good conditions,” said Soumia Alami in a press release. 

Here Is All You Need To Know

  • Through the partnership, the BCP makes available to startups selected and supported by Hseven a financing mechanism, including equity or bank financing depending on the level of maturity of the projects. 
  • Funds would be offered on terms deemed advantageous in terms of deferral, pricing and guarantees. 
  • According to Hseven, eligible startups will have access to a loan of 1.5 to 15 million DH ($1.5 million) without any guarantee or personal guarantee, with a deferral of up to 36 months. 
  • The loans benefit from the guarantee of the Central Guarantee Fund of Morocco.
  • The equity offer initially offers an investment ticket from the innovation fund BCP – Upline Alternative Investments of 1.5 million DH, and secondly, a ticket ranging from 5 to 15 million DH.
  • In terms of support, the offer supports project leaders, particularly in their intangible investments: studies, prototypes, tests …
