Kenya and Rwanda Agree on 10 Areas of Cooperation

Kenya and Rwanda on Tuesday signed an agreement in 10 areas of cooperation to enhance relations. The Memorandum of Understanding will establish mechanisms for effective cooperation in Education, ICT, Gender and Child Development, Youth and Capacity Development for the Public Service.

Other areas of cooperation are in Correctional Services, Health, Diplomatic Training, Agriculture and Cooperatives. Addressing a press conference in Kigali, President William Ruto and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame said the two countries had agreed to work together for the benefit of the people.

They said Kenya and Rwanda will expand trade and investment as well help the region in terms of peace and security.

President Ruto asked Rwanda to make use of the more efficient Port of Mombasa. He said the facility has also been expanded and modernised to handle more cargo.

The President said the Port also offers cargo owners the option to collect goods at the Naivasha Inland Container Depot.

“This will help to save on time and cost, hence enhancing trade between the two countries.”

He said Kenya was committed to working with Rwanda in advancing peace and security, trade and investment and the implementation of Agenda 2063.

The two leaders agreed that the instability in South Sudan, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo require constant attention.  

“We must take advantage of the existing mechanisms to entrench peace as the foundation of the stability that guarantees shared prosperity,” President Ruto added.

President Kagame said the new areas of cooperation will bring Nairobi and Kigali. He saluted the big Kenyan community that has invested in Rwanda.

Kenyan President Ruto Charged the People to Start Exporting Food Instead of Imports

The President of Kenya has pointed out that his country has the potential to feed itself and sell the surplus to other countries. President William Ruto said Kenya should be exporting rather than importing food. Adding that it is time for bold, ambitious and progressive policy decisions were pursued to make the country produce more.

“We must turn agriculture into a commercial economic activity,” he said.

The President explained that the Government was consolidating main trading blocs in Africa “so that we can give value to our farmers”.

“We should allow our farmers to earn more from their sweat by exploiting new and lucrative markets for them,” he noted.

He made the remarks on Thursday at State House in Nairobi during a consultative meeting with Governors, Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry and Development Partners.

The meeting focussed on the promotion of trade, strengthening of market linkages, and the establishment of aggregation centres and industrial parks in counties.

“We have agreed to work together to promote investment and trade so as to stimulate our country’s economic growth.”

The President insisted that Kenya’s products are premium and much sought-after in the world.

He added that land in regions such as Turkana, Mandera, Wajir, among other arid areas should not be lying idle.

“Commercial irrigation will turn these regions into our food baskets. Water harvesting will, therefore, form the main part of our country’s transformation plans.”
