Tizeti Partners Microsoft to Boost High-Speed Internet in Nigeria

Global tech giant, Microsoft is partnering with West African solar-based internet service provider Tizeti to announce a new collaboration to boost high-speed internet in Nigeria with the “Airband initiative”.

The Airband initiative will see the rollout of high-speed Airband internet infrastructure in Oyo State, in the southwest of Africa’s most populous country.

According to the announcement, the Airband initiative supports both Microsoft and Tizeti’s shared goal of connecting more people to the internet in a cost-efficient way, as well as part of its commitment to empowering more Nigerians, stimulating economic activities, and widening the broadband envelope in Africa with affordable broadband connectivity.

With forty percent broadband penetration in December 2021, millions of Nigerians are still excluded from the global digital economy.

Through the Microsoft Airband Initiative, Tizeti and Microsoft say they will use low-cost wireless technologies to make it easier and cheaper for people, especially those in underserved communities, to access the internet and get connected to the digital economy.

Speaking on the partnership, Tizeti’s CEO, Kendall Ananyi, said that Microsoft Airband collaboration will complement Tizeti’s existing initiative in Oyo State and lay a foundation for a robust and thriving digital ecosystem for the large population of vibrant, young people in Oyo State.

“We are happy to work with Microsoft on the Airband Initiative as it extends our mission of bringing affordable and reliable internet to more Nigerians outside the digital envelope,” Ananyi said.

Tizeti recently launched its fixed wireless network in Oyo State, southwest Nigeria, to provide significant opportunities for cities in Oyo State that have not had sufficient broadband infrastructure and to improve the state’s competitiveness with high-speed, and unlimited, yet affordable broadband internet.

“Communities need reliable, affordable internet access in our increasingly digital world,” said Microsoft Airband GM, Vickie Robinson.

Nokia to Expand LTE Network in Nigeria

Nokia and Tizeti have partnered to supply over one million subscribers in Nigeria with LTE technology. The telco will deploy Nokia’s AirScale Base Station TDD-LTE and Fastmile Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) gateways in order to deliver Internet and Virtual Private Network (VPN) services.

The solution is expected to enable Tizeti to deliver a more robust, high-speed internet service to subscribers and the flexibility to seamlessly evolve to 5G Fixed Wireless Access when needed. Nokia says that its FWA solution will allow Tizeti to fast-track broadband access and provide a best-in-class broadband experience to its subscribers. Whereas its AirScale Base Stations ensure high-quality connectivity and coverage and enable Tizeti to evolve the network in line with customer demand.

Tizeti Promises Supers Internet Connection in Nigeria, Raises Capacity to 100Gbps

The emerging role of the internet in almost every aspect of individual and national lives, especially as virtual activities become primary across board, internet service providers are in for a very fierce competition in providing top notch services across the world. This upgrade according to company sources will provide additional capacity to support services as well as future upgrades. The project involved upgrading Tizeti’s existing Gigabit fiber connection of its Lagos Points of Presence (POPs) to 10Gbps and relocating from its owned and operated data center to a world-class Tier III data center. With this increased fiber capacity, Tizeti is poised to continue to offer its affordable and unlimited wi-fi internet service to its customers, while expanding its service offering to include enterprise and business customers. 

Tizeti’s Chief Executive Officer, Kendall Ananyi said that the upgrade will increase the reliability of its services by providing multiple routes for network transit to the internet. Ananyi confirmed the 100Gbps upgrade meets wider connectivity requirements, such as low latency as a result of hosting its 4G LTE core servers within its network in Nigeria. This guarantees faster, more reliable connectivity, as well as reduced operational costs.

Tizeti Launches Accelerated Broadband Penetration in Nigeria

Efforts aimed at accelerating broadband penetration in Nigeria got a boost recently with the launch of Tizeti’s 4G Network in Nigeria. With this development there is more opportunity to drive growth in demand for eCommerce, music, interactive games and video consumption across the country. Company sources say that this is in line with its focus on accelerating access to affordable broadband connectivity in Africa’s underserved populations, using solar-based internet service provider, the first of such in West Africa.

Tizeti launched its 4G LTE network in Nigeria with the plans to extend to leading cities in Nigeria and West Africa in 2020. The launch of its 4G network provides Tizeti the opportunity to drive the growth in demand for eCommerce, music, interactive games and video consumption in Nigeria, especially from popular social media apps that have integrated video calling and video stories as well as content sites such as YouTube, Netflix, and Iroko. The price for a Tizeti unlimited plan is 9,500 Nigerian Naira per month. The company has 1.1 million unique users and internet services that include a new Skype-like personal and business enterprise communications service and access to video streaming sites & services.
