AFDB Backs Egyptian Online Legal Education Startup Kouncel In $1.2M Pre-Seed Funding Round

The African Development Bank (AFDB), the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT), and Egypt’s entrepreneurial development project “Tanmia wa Tatweer” have all invested in Egypt-based online legal education startup Kouncel, in $1.2 million pre-Seed round led by Zaldi Capital. The whole cash raised will be divided into two parts: $280,000 in banknotes and the remainder in in-kind services.

A Look At What The Startup Does

Kouncel is an online video education platform for lawyers founded in 2022 by Ibrahim Saleh. It offers classes on areas such as arbitration, legal drafting, and intellectual property depending on different jurisdictions.
Kouncel is Mena’s first online legal education platform, designed to provide lawyers and businesses in the Mena region with a unique training experience based on their various jurisdictions. Kouncel.com’s initial goal was to reach thousands of students, but it quickly grew to include premium customized courses for individuals and businesses in Egypt and the Gulf area.

The portal offers a variety of weekly learning sequences in areas such as arbitration, legal drafting, corporate law, intellectual property, banking and non-banking law, and law for entrepreneurs. Each learning sequence is made up of short films interwoven with interactive learning exercises that allow students to put what they’ve learned in the videos into practice right away. Tutorial videos, which are analogous to small on-campus discussion groups, an online textbook, and an online discussion forum where students can submit and review questions and comments to each other and teaching assistants are all common features of the courses.
