Egyptian Events Platform, Eventtus, Acquired By US Firm After Four Years Of Partnership

In 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, Eventtus, the Cairo-based firm that creates interactive event apps that allow organisers to engage attendees by enabling them to customise their event schedule through an interactive agenda, announced that it was building a disruptive online event-hosting platform, after raising an undisclosed round of investment from Hala Ventures, Algebra Ventures and DAAL VC. One year on, the events platform has been acquired by the US-based events company, Bevy. The deal’s value was not disclosed, although Eventtus has generated over $2.6 million in fundraising since its inception in 2012, indicating a higher acquisition price.

“Today I’m so excited to announce that Eventtus has been acquired by Bevy! Bevy is focused on enabling businesses to build community and the acquisition allows for us to meet attendees where they are at and how they prefer to experience events. We’re very excited to be joining forces with Bevy.

As my co-founder, Nihal, and I attended entrepreneurship events, we found it hard to recognize and connect with our fellow attendees. We agreed this was a problem we wanted to help solve. We founded Eventtus in 2012 to mobilize events through event planning, networking, and ticketing functionalities within a mobile app,” says co-founder Mai Medhat.

Here Is What You Need To Know

  • Through the acquisition, more than 20 of Eventtus’ engineers have been added to the Bevy team, including Egyptian co-founders Mai Medhat and Nihal Fares.
  • The acquisition also adds a mobile in-person conference app and various additional interaction capabilities for participants to Bevy’s event technology stack. Customers will have the most comprehensive, end-to-end event management solution to manage and scale their virtual, hybrid, and in-person event programs once Bevy’s enterprise community event engine is incorporated.
  • In 2017, the startup successfully closed a US$2 million funding round led by Algebra Ventures and 500 Startups.

Why The Acquisition Was Made

The acquisition, just like the recent acquisitions of South Africa’s Giraffe by Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator and Nigeria’s Paystack by US payments company, Stripe, was aided by a long-standing strategic partnership between the parties.

“Startup Grind and CMX Summit, two conferences organized by Bevy, have been our customers for the past four years. Derek Andersen is the CEO of both Bevy and Startup Grind, and we met during the Startup Grind global conference last year.

The Bevy team knows Eventtus well and has been using the app and other Eventtus products over the past four years, which was a great testimonial to the product. When we met, Derek and I started talking about the industry and partnership opportunities. One thing led to the other, and it was clear that our two organizations are very similar; same values, company culture, and products that complement each other. Together, we can serve our clients better and have a unique offering to events and communities,” Medhat said.

“What’s unique about Bevy is how they thread events together. They’ve built a powerful community event engine that helps enterprise teams create a sense of community among their customers, prospects, partners and employees. This is what all other event platforms are missing. And it’s the key to unlocking global scale and growth” Medhat added.

Speaking on the acquisition, Derek Andersen, CEO and co-founder of Bevy said:

“Enterprises have invested in creating connected communities for their customers, employees and partners. Events are not only an extension of these communities but also provide an important channel for driving ongoing engagement. With this acquisition, we can now further advance our leadership role in enterprise events by delivering an end-to-end white-labelled event system of record that helps enterprise leaders build even stronger and more engaged communities.”

A Big Exit For Previous Investors Such As Algebra Ventures

Previous investors in Eventtus include Algebra Ventures, 500 Startups as well as Hala Ventures, and DAAL VC. All investors have now exited by virtue of the acquisition.

“At Algebra we always believed Mai and Nihal had the potential to play a role in shaping the global events tech space through Eventtus,” said Ziad Mokthar, a Managing Partner at Algebra Ventures. “Bevy would provide a perfect home to deliver on this potential. We are very happy for both teams.”

Egyptian Event Startup Eventtus Raises Funding Round To Move Events Online

Egyptian startup Eventtus is showing early signs that nothing would probably remain the same again after the COVID-19 pandemic. Frustrated by the lockdown brought about by the coronavirus, the startup has secured an undisclosed amount of funding to enable it to launch a digital events platform.

co-founder Mai Medhat

“When events were cancelled and postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and event planners started being concerned about the industry, we took the responsibility to do our thorough research and come up with a new, exclusive product that facilitates and evolves the future of events,” said co-founder Mai Medhat in a blog post.

Here Is All You Need To Know

  • This undisclosed round of investment was from Hala Ventures, Algebra Ventures and DAAL VC
  • Medhat said the startup will be using the funding for further development and innovation in a bid to sustain the industry. The product is expected to be ready in a few weeks.
  • In 2017, the startup successfully closed a US$2 million funding round led by Algebra Ventures and 500 Startups.

We realised that while people are resorting to live streaming on different platforms such as Facebook and Zoom to host sessions and webinars, event planners and attendees will still need the other essential components of an event experience that a simple live video does not completely fulfill. New types and formats of events will emerge to meet the different needs. Our research and development led us to reimagine the whole event experience and aim to revamp the whole industry,” Medhat noted in the blog post.

Why The Investors Invested

The fact that previous investor in the startup, Algebra Ventures, participated in this round of investment is a confirmation of the fact that the startup might be on the right track.

What Eventtus has built over the last few years provides a solid foundation that will allow them to reinvent conferences and exhibitions. The team’s track record of creating innovative experiences makes us confident they can succeed in that,” said Ziad Mokhtar, general partner at Algebra Ventures.

“During crises, there are companies who blame the market for their own failures and those who use the market’s failure to make their own success. We believe that Eventtus belongs to the latter and thus we decided to invest in them during such a critical crisis,” said Ali Abussaud, founder and managing partner at Hala Ventures.

How Long Does It Take To Sell Or Exit A Tech Startup In Africa?

The decision to sell or exit a tech startup typically fills investors and entrepreneurs in Africa with excitement, especially given the potential returns on investments. The recent proposal to buy the artificial intelligence startup InstaDeep from Tunisia has highlighted the significance of startup exits for both investors and founders. InstaDeep would be sold for $687M after over 9 years in business, making it possibly the most significant acquisition to have emerge from Africa. A total of £362 million in cash and BioNTech shares will be paid upfront for 100% of the outstanding InstaDeep shares, excluding the shares already owned by BioNTech, as part of the transaction. Shareholders in InstaDeep will also be qualified for future performance-based milestone payments totaling up to £200 million.

Although it took the founders of InstaDeep almost 9 years to develop such a valuable business, in this study we take into account the typical time it takes to develop a tech startup in Africa to the point where it is prepared for purchase or IPO (Initial Public Offerings), if the proper funding and management are used. We found that, on average, it would take an African tech startup roughly 6.5 or 7 years to mature up to the age of acquisition, although it may take up to 20 years in some situations, out of the total deals of 93 acquisitions and IPOs we analysed.

A List Of Acquired Tech Startups In Africa

As the startup ecosystem in Africa continues to gain momentum and mature, a lot of acquisitions of tech startups and established companies are taking place, in leaps and bounds. The country with the most acquired tech startups in Africa is still South Africa. While other African countries are catching up, particularly with the recent multimillion-dollar acquisitions in Nigeria, South Africa has seen a bigger number of acquisitions over the years. The table below provides some insight into how acquisitions have been made on the continent during the last few years. This data is updated on a half-yearly basis.

South Africa Top On The List Of Countries With The Most Acquired Startups In Africa

The country with the most acquired startups in Africa is still South Africa.

North African Startups Attract Sawari Ventures and Algebra Ventures $150 Million Stake

An Egypt focused fund for North African based startups has attracted about one billion Egyptian pounds raised by Sawari Ventures with aim to ramp up investments in startups across the North Africa region which analysts described as a giant leap for the fund launched in 2018 as the Sawari Ventures Fund I. VCs that participated in the fund includes the CDC Group (which committed $12 million), European Investment Bank, Proparco, and the Dutch Good Growth Fund. The fund’s newer investors include Egyptian banks like the National Bank of Egypt, Banque Misr, Banque du Caire, and Suez Canal Bank. Misr Insurance Group, based in Cairo and Kuwaiti company Ekuity are also in the mix.

Sawari was founded by Ahmed El Alfi, Hany Al-Sonbaty, and Wael Amin in 2010. Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia are the firm’s focus countries. The firm’s portfolio includes Swvl (the bus-hailing startup that raised $42m in 2019), Instabug, Elves, and MoneyFellows, a rotational savings app that closed a $4m Series A last year.

In addition to these, Sawari is focused on fintech, health, and education. But the company also sees “unique opportunities in SaaS products, semiconductors and IoT,” according to a company spokesperson’s statement. A breakdown of Sawari’s investment in its new fund shows that 10% will be passed through Flat6Labs, Sawari’s seed-stage-focused firm. Through Flat6Labs’s offices in Cairo and Tunis, Sawari will provide seed capital to at least 140 startups in the region and follow-on investments in up to 60 companies.

The remaining 90% will go into 20 to 25 growth-stage companies across Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco. The median ticket size for these investments will be between two and three million dollars. Not to be outdone, another VC firm will also be offering ticket sizes of up to $2 million to startups within the North Africa region. Algebra Ventures, a firm based in Egypt plans to raise a $90 million fund. They plan to close the first round of that target by the third quarter of 2021.

According to a company statement, Algebra raised a $54 million fund in 2017 and deployed it in about 21 startups. The company says its 6 most established startups are valued at $350m. Their portfolio includes Eventtus, a digital event management startup, a trucking marketplace called Trella, and Goodsmart, a grocery shopping app.

With its new fund, the company will pursue fintech, agritech, edtech, logistics, and healthcare opportunities. The firm plans to establish itself among “exceptional” seed level founders “and “expand our participation on the Series B level, too,” according to Karim Hussein, who co-manages the firm with Tarek Assad, his co-founder.

African Startups

A List Of Over 500 Active Startup Investors In Africa In The Last 5 Years

Africa has come a long way when it comes to startup financing. Since 2015 at least, thousands of investors — angels, venture capital and private equity firms, credit institutions, high net worth individuals, family offices, accelerators, incubators, development finance institutions, non-profit entities, etc. — have passed through the continent’s startup ecosystem, dropping some funds. However, while different classes of investors have populated this ecosystem, venture capital firms (aka VCs) have shown persistence as well as resourcefulness with funding.

African Startups
African Startups

In the course of plotting this investment landscape, what was most striking was the intensity of the rise of new funds meant for the ecosystem in the past three years alone; that is, between 2017 and 2020. It is expected that many more funds of this nature will crop up even, especially as more parts of Africa continue to migrate to the internet, partly forced by the coronavirus pandemic.

That said, it must be pointed out that the long list below is not exhaustive of all the investors that have ever invested in the ecosystem. In deciding who made the list, all the investors that invested between 2019 and January 31, 2021 were, substantially, listed. For 2018 and backwards, a majority of one-time investors were excluded. They are called one-time because there was no evidence to support any subsequent investments by them. It became necessary to do so so as to assist founders in knowing who is probably still in business, and who to immediately reach out for investments. The door is still very much open, however, for any investor who was not captured in the list but who wishes to be added onto it.

It must also be pointed out that venture capital firms have mostly been preferred over other types of investors because of the very nature of startups themselves.

Finally, if the list becomes so long, tiring to use, or simply boring and you would wish to have a hold of the first-hand document pasted here, kindly feel free and reach across to the writer through any medium, to have the document or more sent to you, although it must be noted here, also, that the document is not free.

Afrikan Heroes continues to wish you the best in your fundraising journey this year and beyond.

Where startup investors in Africa have gone to most in four years -(2015-2019). All data are as adapted from Partech Africa reports for the years considered.

According to African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association 2019 VC report, North American investors represented 42% of the total number of investors that participated in VC investments in Africa between 2014 and 2019, followed by European based investors at 23%. African based investors accounted for only 20%, followed by Asia-Pacific (8%) and investors based in the Middle East (6%).

Plotting Africa’s Startup Funding Landscape: A List Of Over 500 Active Investors In The Last 5 Years

Africa has come a long way in startup financing. Since 2015 at least, thousands of investors — angels, venture capital and private equity firms, credit institutions, high net worth individuals, family offices, accelerators, incubators, development finance institutions, non-profit entities, etc. — have passed through the continent’s startup ecosystem, dropping some funds. However, while different classes of investors have populated this ecosystem, venture capital firms (aka VCs) have shown persistence as well as resourcefulness with funding.

startup investors

Finally, if the list becomes so cumbersome, tiring to use, or simply boring and you would wish to have a hold of the first-hand document pasted here, kindly feel free and reach across to the writer through any medium, to have the document or more sent to you, although it must be noted here, also, that the document is not free.

Afrikan Heroes continues to wish you the best in your fundraising journey this year and beyond.

A Look At What Startup Brimore Does

Brimore looks like a regular ecommerce startup with a touch. The startup’s platform includes supply chain and payment facilities which it claims to be serving hundreds of SMEs, selling thousands of products including packaged foods, personal care, and household goods.

Founded in 2017 by Mohamed Abdulaziz, Ahmed Sheikha, and Mahmoud Refaay, Brimore provides small and medium-sized manufacturers in Egypt with access to nationwide distribution through its large network of individuals (freelancers) who sell and recruit others to sell consumer goods within their local communities.

“For the past two years, on-the-ground operations and commercial planning have been the cornerstone of Brimore’s success. We are now focusing on technology, data analytics and smart financial solutions to make a solid contribution. This new round of investment will enable us to expand our amazing team of star performers aspiring to transform the retail industry in Egypt,”Ahmed Sheikha, the co-founder and CBO of the startup, said.
