Six Agritech Startups Selected For FCMB Agritech Incubator Pitch Program

Six agritech startups have emerged as the finalists for the FCMB Argitech Epic Pitch program for 2020. The six selected agritech startups will pitch their business concept and model to a selected panel of judges for a chance to emerge winner and receive an equity-free grant of 1-million Nigerian naira. The 1st runner up wins 500 000 Nigerian naira.

“This initiative plays an important role in helping young and driven Nigerian entrepreneurs grow their Agric-focused business. This mission would eventually build investible, sustainable, and scalable AgriTech businesses that can contribute to the nation’s employment rate as well as the growth of the nation’s GDP,’’ Kudzai Gumunyu, Divisional Head, Agric Business at FCMB said. 

Here Is What You Need To Know

  • Hosted and facilitated by First City Monument Bank (FCMB) held in partnership with the bank’s long term partner Passion Incubator, a Lagos-based early-stage incubator, and accelerator, the program aims to support early to growth-stage entrepreneurs to grow and scale their Agritech businesses.
  • The program is focused on specific agriculture value chain solutions including; Processing/Production/Storage; Agricultural Finance; Agricultural Marketing; Supply chain.
  • With a reported 2000 agritech startups from over 16 countries around the world applying for the prestigious program, it is the largest number of applications received since the inception of the initiative.

The Six Selected Finalists Include:

  • Farmz2U: helping farmers farm better with tailored agricultural expertise using data and market access via system integrations.
  • Beat Drone: implements drone input on the farm production process such as spraying precise chemicals, crop health assessment, and farmland mapping.
  • ColdHubs: designs, installs, commissions and operates 100% solar-powered walk-in cold rooms branded as “ColdHubs”, in markets and farm clusters. The Hubs are used by smallholder farmers, retailers, and wholesalers, to store and preserve fresh fruits, vegetables, and other perishable foods 24/7, extending their shelf life from 2 days to 21 days.
  • Tradebuza: digitizes commodities sourcing and trade for large agribusinesses who run out-grower schemes. We digitize their last-mile operations, including digitization of their smallholder and farmland profiles, farm activities, and post-harvest ops tracking.
  • Farmspeak Technology: focuses on manufacturing IoT-powered hardware devices that work with web and mobile application using Artificial Intelligence(AI) to diagnose poultry diseases, monitor and regulate the poultry environment to help smallholder poultry farmer in Nigeria improve their farm management, reduce wastage and mortality, thereby increasing profitability in poultry farming.
  • AgroHive: Africa’s first Agricultural HR startup deploying ICT in assisting over 1,000 agribusinesses tackle 1 of their biggest challenges, which is to have easy access to a consistent supply of skilled agricultural staff that will increase agribusiness productivity and profitability.

In addition, the selected winners will have access to workspace and networks for innovation and collaboration through Hub One.

All of the finalists will pitch their concept to the following judges ;Kudzai Gumunyu, Divisional Head, Agric Business at FCMB; Kola Masha, Managing Director at Babban Gona; Yemi Keri, Co-founder at Rising Tide Africa and Rishi Raithatha, Insights Manager, AgriTech Programme at GSMA for a chance to be among the winners.

The final will take place on 28 August with the top two startups selected winning their share of 1.5-million Nigeria Naira.

Nigerian Bank, FCMB, Is Inviting Nigerian Agritech Startups To Pitch Under This New Programme

This is a huge chance for agritech startups across Nigeria. First City Monument Bank (FCMB), one of Nigeria’s biggest financial players in the development of the country’s agriculture sector, has announced the 2020 edition of the FCMB Agritech Epic Pitch. Now in its 3rd Year, the 2020 edition of the FCMB Agritech Epic Pitch will be implemented through Hub One (the Bank’s tech Hub located in Lagos, Nigeria) in partnership with Passion Incubator, a Lagos-based early-stage tech incubator, and accelerator.

Here Is All You Need To Know

The goal of the 2020 incubation is to:

  • Support at least top 2 Agritech startups in Nigeria with seed investments and grants, of ₦1.5 million ($3.8k). 
  • Access to workspace, market & network that stimulates innovation, collaboration and business growth.
  • Provide opportunities to connect with potential customers and investors.

What Are Expected of Prospective Applicants

  • The 2020 edition of the program will focus on the following Agricultural value chain solutions;

-Processing/Production/Storage
– Agricultural Finance
– Agricultural Marketing
– Supply chain

  • Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s edition would be a virtual engagement.

Hub One was created in February 2019 by FCMB as a tech-themed co-working space. Its physical spaces, network and resources allow for partnerships, collaborations, and possible investments. It is a professional office space with unlimited internet, constant power supply, free coffee and a community of like minds.

This is a huge chance for agritech startups across Nigeria. The FCMB-Wennovation Agritech Incubation Programme, in conjunction with Wennovation Hub, has launched a bid to guide early-stage AgriTech Start-ups across Nigeria so that they can test and validate their ideas as well as gather their first set of customers or pivot if need be.

This will be done through a combination of financial support, guidance, and training. The secondary objective is to prepare these start-ups for acceleration.

Here Is All You Need To Know

The goal of the 2019 incubation is to:

  • Expose 10 teams across Nigeria to the root of the pre-defined problem statement by merging an in-depth problem definition strategy with an immersion process.
  • Support at least top 10 teams with a demonstrable Minimum Viable Product to build a sustainable business model by taking them through a design thinking workshop and subsequently a 3 weeks incubation program.
  • Support at least tops 2 Agritech startups in Nigeria with seed investments and grants.
  • Offer access to experienced mentors and a cohort structure that encourages peer learning and support.
  • Provide opportunities to connect with potential customers and investors.

What Are Expected of Prospective Applicants

  • Applications should focus on four problem statements, namely Input, Production, Processing and Storage, and Marketing and Sales, with Wennovation Hub looking for MVP-stage startups with some form of market validation.
  • The programme commences with a one-week immersion component where selected startups get to interact with community members through Wennovation Hub immersion partners. Startups who successfully complete the immersion programme and the required reporting commitments will be invited to a two-week Bootcamp in Lagos.
  • It all concludes with a demo day in September, with all successful startups to be taken into a six-month post-Bootcamp aftercare programme

At the end of calls for application, 10 Agritech start-ups will be selected for the incubation program. 

The program will be concluded with a pitching competition at the demo day where 2 Agritech startups will win a total of N3million in Grants.
